Problems reading 97 bmw 540i

     This page says the MaxiDiag supports 1996-2001 bmw's but it won't read my 97 bmw. When I scan it, it takes me to a menu where I have to manually choose the year and model. When I pick the correct options, it brings me to a menu that starts at 1998, but doesn't go lower. 

    The page I linked below says "20-pin Connector for 1996-2001 BMW vehicles". My MaxiDiag came with an ODBII 16-pin. Could this be causing a problem? Because it does read 98 and newer cars. Has anyone else encountered this problem?
